Prabowo pushes Indonesia to host FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026
The September-October tournament is on FIFA's official calendar, affecting rankings and forcing clubs to release national-team players.
President Prabowo Subianto is pushing Indonesia to bid as one of the hosts of the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026, the inaugural tournament for Southeast Asian countries scheduled for September to October. Youth and Sports Minister Erick Thohir said he reported the opportunity during a meeting with Prabowo in Hambalang, Bogor, on Friday, June 19, 2026. According to Erick, FIFA responded positively, and Prabowo asked that preparations be drawn up immediately, including coordination with other ministries on funding and health needs. Erick hopes the host selection can be announced within weeks. Unlike the AFF Cup, the new event is on FIFA's official calendar, so results will affect rankings and clubs will be required to release national-team players.
