Prabowo opens 35th NU congress in Jombang, Gus Yahya eyes 2031
The congress runs August 27-31 in Jombang with 2,232 delegates, as Prabowo jokes about collecting his NU membership card.
President Prabowo Subianto opened the 35th Nahdlatul Ulama congress at Pondok Pesantren Bahrul Ulum Tambakberas in Jombang, East Java, on Thursday (27/8), marked by the beating of a traditional drum. In his remarks, PBNU Chairman Yahya Cholil Staquf said he hoped Prabowo could also open the 36th NU congress in 2031. Before 2,232 delegates from regional and branch boards, Yahya stressed that NU needs to work with the government so state programs can be delivered more effectively to the public. Prabowo, who was accompanied by Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, also joked by asking Gus Yahya for his NU membership card and said he would return for the closing on 31 August if the card were given.
