Police: Jesslyn golf athlete’s mother ordered Jakarta kidnapping
Investigators are still waiting to hear from Jesslyn, a step that could determine whether the case stands or falls.
Police said the kidnapping of women’s golf athlete Jesslyn Wijaya Lay in Central Jakarta was ordered by the victim’s own mother. According to AKBP Roby Heri Saputra, head of criminal investigations at Polres Metro Jakarta Pusat, Jesslyn was taken from her grandmother’s birthday event at Saung Kita Restaurant in Mangga Besar, Sawah Besar, then driven to Semarang before flying from Ahmad Yani Airport to Malaysia and on to Bangkok with her mother and aunt. Investigators suspect the motive was the parents’ refusal of Jesslyn’s relationship with her boyfriend. But police have not ruled out the possibility that no crime occurred, because the case hinges on Jesslyn’s direct account of whether there was any physical or psychological coercion when she was taken on 13 July.
