Polda Metro Probes Qur’an Memorization Challenge With Liquor Prize
Police have identified the person behind the challenge and questioned organizers, a brand owner and several eyewitnesses.
Polda Metro Jaya has begun investigating alleged criminal violations in a challenge at the The Sounds Project festival in Ancol, North Jakarta, that offered alcoholic drinks as a reward for reciting Surah Ad-Dhuha. The General Crimes Directorate said investigators have questioned management, event organizers, the beverage brand owner and several visitors who witnessed the incident on 9 August 2026. Police have also identified the person who created the challenge. Early findings suggest the person was a visitor who took a microphone and spontaneously issued the challenge to other attendees. Meanwhile, two reports were filed on 11 August, one with Bareskrim Polri by Asosiasi Lawyer Muslim Indonesia and another with Polda Metro Jaya by Tim Hukum Muslim. The incident went viral on social media and drew condemnation for being seen as offensive to religion.
