Hungary PM to nominate chess grandmaster Judit Polgar for president
Parliament will pick a transitional president until a new constitution takes effect, for up to five years.
Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar will ask chess grandmaster Judit Polgar to become the country’s new president, a day after President Tamas Sulyok signed a constitutional amendment ending his term. Magyar said he will meet Polgar on Monday in Budapest to ask whether she is willing to accept the nomination. The presidency in Hungary is ceremonial, but parliament, now controlled by the Tisza party with two-thirds of the seats, will choose a new head of state for the transition period until a new constitution takes effect, or for a maximum of five years. The move is part of Magyar’s effort to dismantle the power base from the Viktor Orban era after a landslide win in the April election.
