Pigai seeks legal basis for Kementerian HAM to revoke licenses

He said the ministry also lacks budget authority for emergency humanitarian aid and human rights compliance assessments.

Minister of Human Rights Natalius Pigai is urging faster deliberation of a law, presidential regulation and presidential instruction so Kementerian HAM has a stronger legal basis. During a visit to Sumedang, Jawa Barat, on Friday, Pigai said that without such a framework, his ministry still has little room to take concrete steps, including issuing warnings and pushing for the revocation of company licenses for human rights violations. He also said the ministry does not yet have a legal basis for meeting human rights needs, limiting the use of state budget funds for emergency humanitarian aid in conflict areas. According to Pigai, the proposed rules have been submitted to DPR RI, Kementerian Hukum and Kementerian Sekretariat Negara. Republika also reported that President Prabowo Subianto had previously authorized the drafting of a presidential regulation on assessing business actors’ compliance with business and human rights.
