Philippines quake kills 32 as 130 aftershocks hit Mindanao

What’s next: Coastal alerts were later eased, but damage checks, airport closures and searches for missing people are continuing.

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake off Mindanao killed at least 32 people in the southern Philippines on Monday, injured more than 100 and left nearly two dozen missing as rescuers fanned out across damaged communities. Buildings collapsed in General Santos, including a shopping center housing a Jollibee outlet and a structure on a school campus, while landslides hit parts of Sarangani. Tsunami warnings were issued in the Philippines and neighboring countries after the offshore quake, with smaller waves recorded in Indonesia, Palau and southern Japan before some alerts were canceled. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered a disaster response, classes were suspended in affected areas and General Santos airport closed pending inspections.
