Peru heads to June 7 runoff after first-round count dragged on

What’s next: Electoral officials expect the result could take about a month if the race is close and recount demands pile up.

Peru will hold a presidential runoff on June 7 between leftist Roberto Sanchez and conservative Keiko Fujimori after an April first round that took nearly a month to confirm. Electoral authorities said they changed ballot-distribution logistics and set up a new risk committee after delays and late-opening polling stations left thousands unable to vote, including in Lima. National Jury of Elections chief Roberto Burneo said confidence in the system fell after the disruptions. The winner, due to take office on July 28, will lead a major copper and critical minerals exporter that has had eight presidents in a decade.
