Peru court voids ex-President Humala's 15-year graft sentence

Peru's Constitutional Court nullified former President Ollanta Humala's 15-year money-laundering conviction, leading to his release Friday from Barbadillo Prison in Lima. Humala, who led Peru from 2011 to 2016, had been found guilty over campaign money tied to Brazilian builder Odebrecht, now known as Novonor, and alleged support from Venezuela for his 2006 and 2011 runs. The court ruled that electoral contributions did not amount to money laundering when the acts occurred, voiding the proceedings. His wife, Nadine Heredia, also received a 15-year sentence in the case but remains in Brazil after obtaining asylum. The case is part of the wider Odebrecht corruption scandal that has implicated several former Peruvian leaders.
