Pertamax price rises 32% to Rp16.250 per liter in Indonesia

Longer Pertalite queues are reported, while middle-class consumers are cutting car use and switching fuel to manage costs.

Pertamax prices in Indonesia rose 32 percent to Rp16.250 per liter starting June 10, from Rp12.300 previously. The increase in Pertamina's RON 92 gasoline was driven by a roughly 50 percent jump in global oil prices since the Iran war and an 8 percent weakening of the rupiah against the U.S. dollar since the start of the year, according to The Business Times. Pertamax Green was also said to rise from Rp12.900 to Rp17.000 per liter. The impact is already being felt at gas stations, with longer Pertalite queues as some motorists switch to the subsidized fuel sold at Rp10.000 per liter. Other consumers are continuing to use Pertamax, but cutting back on car use over concerns that transport and vehicle maintenance costs will also rise.
