Pentagon seeks $80 billion more as Iran war costs mount

Why it matters: The request would add to a major military spending increase after Trump signed an interim deal to end the conflict.

The Pentagon is seeking roughly $80 billion from Congress, with most of the money tied to the cost of the U.S. war against Iran. The request, described to senators ahead of a formal submission, would come on top of a broader military spending boost already sought by President Donald Trump. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has been meeting lawmakers on Capitol Hill before the administration sends the package. The push comes just after Trump signed an interim agreement aimed at ending the Iran war, even as the administration turns public attention back to the U.S. economy with a planned visit Tuesday to a Mack Truck facility in Pennsylvania.
