Government prepares E20 gasoline road tests before 2028 mandate
E5 is targeted to become mandatory before December, then rise to E10 in early 2027 while allocation and Pertamina readiness are pending.
The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is preparing road tests for gasoline mixed with 20 percent bioethanol, or E20, before the mandatory policy takes effect in 2028. Eniya Listiani Dewi, director general of new and renewable energy and energy conservation, said the ministry has been in contact with Gabungan Industri Kendaraan Bermotor Indonesia (Gaikindo) to directly test vehicle engine readiness and the national automotive industry infrastructure. Before that, the government is prioritizing an E5 mandate this year and aims to have it in place before December, then increase it to E10 in early 2027. E5 implementation is said to be waiting only for the ministerial decision on volume allocation. The government is also preparing regulatory support, including excise exemptions through PMK and simpler business permits for blending. On the technical side, Lemigas is still testing ethanol blends across various octane ratings, while readiness of Pertamina facilities is also being monitored.
