Online sellers required to hold NIB, government sets 18-month deadline

Under Permendag 19/2026, e-commerce platforms must reject seller registrations that lack the required business permit.

The government requires business operators selling through electronic commerce platforms to have a Nomor Induk Berusaha (NIB) as the basic legal identity of their business. The requirement takes effect under Peraturan Menteri Perdagangan Nomor 19 Tahun 2026. Minister of Trade Budi Santoso said the NIB opens access to financing, training programs, partnerships and a wider digital market. For the transition period, sellers already operating on digital platforms are given 18 months to comply, while new sellers have six months. E-commerce platforms are also required to reject registrations from sellers that do not yet have business licensing. The Kementerian UMKM added that the NIB makes it easier for business operators to enter government programs, exports and industrial supply-chain cooperation.
