Partial solar eclipse reaches parts of US and Canada as totality crosses Europe

A solar eclipse on Wednesday will bring only a partial view to parts of the United States and Canada, while the path of totality runs from near the North Pole across Greenland, Iceland, Spain and part of Portugal. NASA figures cited by the Associated Press show some of the biggest North American views in St. Johns, Newfoundland and Labrador, with 53% sun coverage, and Anchorage, Alaska, with 28%. New York City is expected to see 9%, Washington 4% and Detroit 3%. It will be continental Europe's first total solar eclipse since 1999. Skywatchers need certified eclipse glasses to view any part of the event safely.
