Pakistan school roof collapse kills at least 33 children and teacher
What's new: Police arrested the school's owner as investigators examine whether substandard construction and code violations caused the collapse.
At least 33 children and one female teacher were killed Thursday when the roof of a private school collapsed in Peshawar, Pakistan, trapping pupils under rubble across three floors, hospital and rescue officials said. More than a dozen others were injured, some critically, after the collapse at Al-Khair school in Dir Colony shortly after classes began. Officials said all the children killed or hurt were 13 or younger. Rescuers later said everyone trapped had been pulled out. Police chief Mian Saeed said the school's owner had been arrested and described the structure as weak, overloaded and built with substandard roof slabs. Authorities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa ordered an investigation into the cause.
