Oregon school shooting kills 4 after 16-year-old enters campus

A 16-year-old gunman killed three children and a teacher at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, before he was shot dead after entering the campus on Oct. 15, police said. Another child and a teacher were taken to a local hospital in critical condition. Bend police said officers reached the school at 1:02 p.m., minutes after emergency calls reported an active shooter. Police Chief Mike Krantz said a community member saw the suspect enter the school, followed him inside and engaged him. Investigators said the teenager, a Bend resident, appeared to have forced his way in by firing at locked doors. The district canceled classes, activities and athletic events across Bend-La Pine schools the next day.
