Ontario puts up "Lake Ontario" sign after Trump renames lake

Why it matters: The name fight has widened a U.S.-Canada trade clash after Washington hit Canadian goods with 50% tariffs.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford put up a large "Lake Ontario — Now and Always" billboard on the Canadian shore after President Donald Trump ordered the U.S. government to rename the shared lake "Lake America." The sign, in English and French, was installed near the U.S. border along a route used by American visitors. Trump signed the order after trade talks with Canada collapsed and the United States imposed new 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods. Prime Minister Mark Carney has pledged "dollar for dollar" counter-tariffs next month. The order gives the Interior Department 30 days to update the Geographic Names Information Service, but the change applies only to U.S. official usage.
