Ontario puts up 'Lake Ontario' billboard after Trump rename order

Why it matters: The fight comes after US-Canada trade talks collapsed and Washington hit $20 billion in Canadian goods with 50% tariffs.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford put up a large “Lake Ontario — Now and Always” billboard on the Canadian shore Saturday, escalating Canada’s pushback after President Donald Trump ordered the lake renamed “Lake America” in US federal usage. The sign, in English and French, stands near the US border on a route used by cross-border travelers. Trump’s order followed the collapse of trade talks last week and new 50% US tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods. Prime Minister Mark Carney has vowed “dollar for dollar” retaliation. The order directs the Interior Department to update US domestic naming records within 30 days, but Canada and other countries do not have to adopt the change.
