Ohio chemical tank blast forces 900 evacuations in Toledo
What's new: A deputy was injured, and officials warned the tank could keep emitting toxic glycidyl methacrylate and still explode again.
A chemical tank exploded in Toledo, Ohio, late Tuesday, sending more than 900 residents from nearby homes and businesses and prompting a wider shelter-in-place order as crews monitored the risk of another blast. Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz said a sheriff's deputy was hurt while responding around 9:30 p.m. and drove himself to a hospital. MC Tank Transport said the tank held glycidyl methacrylate, an industrial chemical used in plastics, paints and coatings. Officials said the substance can turn to gas when released and may irritate the eyes, nose, mouth and skin, while overexposure can cause headaches, dizziness, nausea and vomiting. Dense fog delayed drone checks of the site, and responders stayed back because of the explosion risk.
