Oct. 28 Youth Pledge marked as a key unity milestone
The 1928 pledge emerged from the Second Youth Congress in Jakarta after a series of meetings among regional youth groups.
The Youth Pledge, observed every Oct. 28, is remembered as one of the key milestones in Indonesia's unity. The pledge emerged during the Second Youth Congress on 27-28 October 1928 in Jakarta, after young people from various regional organizations pushed for a common struggle beyond local identities. Earlier, cooperation among groups began to take shape through the First Youth Congress on 30 April-2 Mei 1926. The 1928 congress was initiated by Perhimpunan Pelajar-Pelajar Indonesia and held in three sessions at Gedung Katholieke Jongenlingen Bond, Oost-Java Bioscoop, and Indonesische Clubgebouw on Jalan Kramat 106. The pledge was drafted by Muhammad Yamin and read out by congress chairman Sugondo Djojopuspito. Before the reading, Wage Rudolf Supratman played Indonesia Raya on the violin.
