NU congress adopts AHWA, 9 clerics to elect PBNU chair
The AHWA option won 401 of 552 valid votes in Jombang, replacing either consensus talks or a direct ballot.
The 35th Nahdlatul Ulama congress adopted the Ahlul Halli wal Aqdi (AHWA) mechanism to elect the PBNU chairman for the 2026-2031 term. The decision was taken in a plenary vote at Pondok Pesantren Bahrul Ulum Tambakberas, Jombang, East Java, from Sunday night into early Monday. Of 552 ballots cast, the move to AHWA won 401 votes, while the option to keep musyawarah or voting won 150; one ballot was invalid. Under the new system, the chairman will be chosen by a council of nine kiai khos or kiai sepuh. Mohammad Nuh read out the tally and declared the change approved at 00.39 WIB. Chairman candidate KH Abdul Ghaffar Rozin said the congress decision must be respected by all.
