North Korea’s TraderTraitor tied to record $6 billion Binance hack
What’s new: The group is linked to Lazarus and has used fake recruiting tests and malware in earlier crypto thefts.
U.S. authorities have linked North Korea’s TraderTraitor hacking unit to the more than $6 billion theft of virtual assets from Binance in the Oct. 29 attack, a breach described as the biggest crypto heist on record. The operation is associated with the broader Lazarus Group, which Washington has blamed for multiple high-profile cyberattacks and thefts. Officials say Pyongyang has spent decades building a cyber force that helps generate money for its weapons program. In past cases, TraderTraitor operatives posed as recruiters, sent job-test files carrying malicious code and then used the access to steal digital assets.
