North Korea fires about 10 short-range ballistic missiles into sea

What's new: South Korea said the missiles flew roughly 300 kilometers after Pyongyang rejected scaled-back U.S.-South Korea drills.

North Korea fired about 10 short-range ballistic missiles toward its eastern waters on Thursday, South Korea's military said, a day after Pyongyang dismissed a U.S. move to reduce joint drills with South Korea. The Joint Chiefs of Staff said the launches came from the North's capital region around 5 p.m. and that each missile traveled about 300 kilometers. Japan's prime minister's office also detected the launch. Seoul said it had strengthened surveillance and was coordinating with the United States and Japan, while the presidential national security council urged North Korea to stop ballistic missile launches. The test followed Washington and Seoul's decision to cut back the 11-day Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise after President Donald Trump pushed for a substantial reduction.
