Nigeria logs first Ebola case in a decade, traces 44 contacts
Why it matters: The patient arrived in Abuja from Uganda after travel linked to Congo's outbreak, widening cross-border containment risks.
Nigeria confirmed its first Ebola case in about 10 years after a woman in Abuja tested positive for the Bundibugyo strain and was placed in isolation. Health officials said she arrived in Nigeria on Oct. 5, developed symptoms on Oct. 7 and sought treatment at a private hospital on Oct. 11 before testing positive on Oct. 19. Authorities have identified 44 contacts, mostly healthcare workers and her husband, a Swiss national, and are also tracing passengers on her Ethiopian Airlines flights. Uganda said it has no active Ebola cases and that travel through the country does not prove infection occurred there. The source of exposure remains under investigation, with Democratic Republic of Congo battling a large outbreak.
