Nevada's Hawk Fire tops 10,500 acres, forces evacuations near Reno

Why it matters: About 1,000 homes were threatened, some structures burned and a Reno-area hospital evacuated patients.

The Hawk Fire surged past 10,500 acres outside Reno on Saturday, pushing evacuations across parts of Washoe County as strong winds drove flames toward neighborhoods. Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency, and officials said about 1,000 homes were at risk. Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve said structures had already burned, though officials did not specify how many or what type. About 400 firefighters from local, state and federal agencies were assigned to the fire, with aircraft supporting overnight operations. The blaze also knocked out power for thousands of customers, closed part of U.S. 395 and prompted Northwest Specialty Hospital to move patients out as a precaution.
