Nearly 240 migrant workers in Singapore went unpaid for 2 months
What’s next: Labor authorities are investigating two employers as meals, housing, salary-claim help and job matching are arranged.
Nearly 240 migrant workers in Singapore’s process sector have gone without pay for up to two months, prompting support from the National Trades Union Congress and the Ministry of Manpower. The unpaid salary claims involve Process Maintenance Solutions and Jurong Technical & Construction. The Migrant Workers’ Centre and the ministry’s ACE Group met 230 workers on Oct. 19 and 20 to assess needs tied to wages, food, housing and employment. About 90 workers are receiving daily meals, while authorities and union groups arrange centralized accommodation, salary claims including overtime, financial aid and job matching. The ministry said Oct. 24 that its investigation is ongoing and that enforcement action could follow if labor-law breaches are found.
