Najib Razak leaves prison, begins home detention in Malaysia
UMNO paid the RM50 million fine tied to Najib’s conditional pardon, keeping him under house arrest until August 2028.
Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak left Kajang Prison on Friday and began serving the remainder of his sentence under house detention after the RM50 million fine was paid. UMNO said a solidarity fund for Najib had reached its target and the money was deposited with the Kuala Lumpur High Court in the morning. Najib, 73, has been jailed since 2022 after the Supreme Court upheld convictions on seven charges linked to RM42 million from SRC International, a former 1MDB unit. He was initially sentenced to 12 years in prison and fined RM210 million, before the Pardon Board in 2024 reduced his sentence to six years and lowered the fine to RM50 million. In September, Malaysia's King Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar granted a conditional pardon allowing Najib to serve the rest of his sentence at home until Aug. 23, 2028.
