Myanmar’s Min Aung Hlaing heads to Moscow for Putin talks

What's new: The visit is expected to yield agreements on economic, security and social cooperation as Myanmar seeks partners amid Western isolation.

Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing arrived in Moscow ahead of Aug. 18 talks with President Vladimir Putin, his first trip to Russia since taking office in April after a widely criticized election. The Kremlin said the leaders will discuss stronger bilateral ties, plus regional and international issues, and are expected to sign several agreements. Myanmar’s President Office said the agenda includes the economy, security and social affairs. Russia has remained one of Myanmar’s closest partners since the 2021 coup, with ties spanning arms sales and nuclear technology. Min Aung Hlaing is also scheduled to meet Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, lower-house speaker Vyacheslav Volodin and attend the Myanmar-Russia Business Forum.
