Myanmar airstrike on Sagaing monastery kills 14 during retreat
Why it matters: The strike hit civilians gathered for Buddhist Lent in a region where investigators have accused the military of repeated attacks on public buildings.
A Myanmar military airstrike hit a monastery in Myaung township in Sagaing region on Friday, killing 14 civilians who had gathered for a meditation retreat marking Buddhist Lent, according to opposition fighters and a local rescue worker. Witnesses said the attack struck the monastery hall at about 9 a.m. and hit the site a second time as rescuers searched for survivors. The dead included 11 men and three women, mostly ages 50 to 70, and several monks were injured, BBC Burmese reported. Myanmar's military did not immediately comment. The country has been in civil war since the 2021 coup that ousted Aung San Suu Kyi.
