MUI deputy in Assisi urges world not to bring war to Asia

The appeal came at a Sant'Egidio interfaith forum as conflicts in Gaza, Myanmar, Ukraine, Iran, Palestine and Yemen drew scrutiny.

Deputy Chairman of Majelis Ulama Indonesia KH Marsudi Syuhud urged the world not to import war into Asia, but to spread the values of peace from the region. He delivered that message at Forum 21, titled “Asia: Religions Seeking Peace in a World at War,” held by Komunitas Sant’Egidio in Assisi, Italy, on 25–27 October 2026. Before religious leaders and academics from around the world, Marsudi cited the conflicts in Gaza, Myanmar, Ukraine, Iran, Palestine, and Yemen. He pointed to the principle of salam in Islam, Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam in Hinduism, Ahimsa in Buddhism, harmony in Confucianism, and compassion in Christianity as a basis for continuing to promote dialogue, diplomacy and negotiation.
