MPR says Aug. 18 Constitution Day is not ceremonial

MPR urges wider promotion of the 1945 Constitution to young people, citing uneven enforcement and constitutional awareness.

MPR said the annual observance of Constitution Day every Aug. 18 should not stop as a yearly ceremony. Acting Secretary General of MPR RI Siti Fauziah said the moment should be used to strengthen nationalism, recall the struggles of the nation’s founders, and revive awareness that the constitution must guide daily life. She said UUD Negara Republik Indonesia Tahun 1945 must remain the reference for state life, while enforcement of the rules and constitutional awareness have not yet fully worked properly. For that reason, MPR said all elements of the nation need to work together, including socializing national values and constitutional principles to the younger generation. Constitution Day is observed every Aug. 18 under Keputusan Presiden Nomor 18 Tahun 2008.
