More than 41 million Colombians vote in polarized presidential runoff
Why it matters: The contest pits Iván Cepeda against Abelardo de la Espriella over security, peace talks and ties with the US.
Colombians cast ballots Sunday in a high-stakes presidential runoff between Iván Cepeda, a lawmaker aligned with outgoing President Gustavo Petro, and conservative outsider Abelardo de la Espriella. More than 41 million people were eligible to vote, with polls scheduled to close at 4 p.m. The two advanced from a May 31 first round in which de la Espriella won 44% and Cepeda took 41%, according to official results. The campaign has centered on fears of renewed internal conflict: de la Espriella pushed a hard-line security approach, while Cepeda vowed to continue Petro's attempts at dialogue with illegal armed groups. Petro also repeated unproven claims about the first-round vote as polling began.
