Montreal shooting killed officer, civilian and gunman

What's new: Police said the suspect acted alone, and the slain officer was Montreal's first killed on duty in 24 years.

A midday shooting in Montreal's Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood on June 22 left a police officer, a civilian and the suspected gunman dead, and seriously wounded a second officer. Montreal police chief Fady Dagher said officers responded to reports of an active shooter around 11:30 a.m. and exchanged fire with a man using what police described as a long gun from inside a building. Authorities said they do not yet know the motive and have not determined whether the attack was a hate crime or terrorism. Quebec issued an emergency alert for an armed suspect before lifting it after police killed the man. Traffic on a nearby motorway and metro service were halted during the response.
