Mirra Andreeva, 19, wins French Open for first Grand Slam title
What’s new: The Russian became the youngest women’s champion at Roland Garros since Monica Seles in 1992.
Mirra Andreeva won the French Open on Saturday, beating Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska 6-3, 6-2 in the women’s final at Roland Garros for her first Grand Slam title. The 19-year-old Russian, seeded eighth, is the youngest woman to win the tournament since Monica Seles in 1992. Chwalinska, ranked No. 114, was trying to become the first qualifier to win the title in Paris. After a shaky start in windy conditions, Andreeva took control by reeling off nine straight games and finished the match in 1 hour, 22 minutes. She celebrated by dropping to the clay after a backhand winner on match point before embracing coach Conchita Martinez in the stands.
