Michigan Senate primary narrows to 2 Democrats after McMorrow exit

What's next: The Aug. 4 primary will pit Haley Stevens against Abdul El-Sayed in a race both parties see as pivotal to Senate control.

Michigan's Democratic Senate primary has become a two-candidate contest after state Sen. Mallory McMorrow suspended her campaign. That leaves Rep. Haley Stevens, backed by party establishment figures including Chuck Schumer, against former Wayne County Health Department Director Abdul El-Sayed, who has support from Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The Aug. 4, 2026, primary winner is expected to face former Rep. Mike Rogers in November for the seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Gary Peters. Democrats view the race as a must-hold in a state rated a toss-up by Cook Political Report as they try to reclaim the Senate majority from Republicans.
