Mexico will ask U.S. prosecutors to pursue criminal investigations into 17 deaths of Mexican nationals tied to immigration enforcement, widening a dispute with Washington over the treatment of detainees and migrants. Mexican officials said 14 citizens died in ICE custody and three more during enforcement operations. The move follows the July 7 shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old Mexican national, by an ICE agent in Houston. President Claudia Sheinbaum said Mexico would move beyond diplomatic protests, while Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco said the government would also file civil lawsuits against companies that run detention centers. U.S. authorities have said the agent fired in self-defense after Salgado Araujo tried to ram an officer.
