Met scraps 2027 John Galliano show after backlash over past slurs
Why it matters: The canceled Costume Institute show was meant to launch the 2027 Met Gala, one of fashion’s biggest annual events.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art canceled its planned 2027 Costume Institute exhibition on British designer John Galliano after backlash over his past antisemitic and racist remarks. The show, “John Galliano: Horizons,” had been set to open in May and serve as the spring exhibition tied to the annual Met Gala. Galliano, who was fired by Dior in 2011 and later convicted in France over antisemitic abuse, said he remained accountable for the pain caused to Jewish and Asian communities. The Met said it would replace the exhibition with another show to be named later. Vogue editorial leader and Met trustee Anna Wintour backed the decision, while New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin welcomed the move after criticizing the planned honor.
