Environment Minister: Landfills stay open, open dumping ends

New: Bali still targets TPA Suwung to stop taking mixed waste starting Aug. 1, 2026.

Environment Minister Moh Jumhur Hidayat stressed that final waste disposal sites in Indonesia will not be closed, including TPA Suwung in Denpasar, Bali. The policy the government is pushing is to end open dumping, the practice of collecting, transporting and dumping waste without sorting or further handling. According to Jumhur, waste should be separated at home, while organic waste should be processed before reaching a landfill through TPS3R or TPST. Under that scheme, only about 23-24 percent of residue would go to a landfill. He said residue would be handled through controlled sanitary landfilling using geomembranes or periodic soil cover. The explanation came after Bali Governor Wayan Koster previously set a target for TPA Suwung to be fully closed and stop receiving waste shipments by Aug. 1, 2026.
