Megawati Welcomes Revocation of 1967 TAP MPRS on Bung Karno
She said Bung Karno’s family waited 56 years because the first president’s legal status was never tested in court.
PDI Perjuangan Chair Megawati Soekarnoputri welcomed the revocation of TAP MPRS Number XXXIII/MPRS/1967, which once stripped the powers of Indonesia's first president, Soekarno. At the opening of the “Mata Hati Soekarno” art exhibition at Le Gareca Space in Bantul, Yogyakarta, on Saturday, June 6, 2026, Megawati said her family had carried a long historical burden because of the decree. She said the TAP MPRS was issued without clear legal proof against Bung Karno and left his legal standing in limbo for decades. Megawati said the wait lasted 56 years. The exhibition, held to mark the 125th anniversary of Bung Karno’s birth, features works by 47 artists across generations on his life, ideas and national legacy.
