McConnell says fall and pneumonia caused weeks-long Senate absence
What's new: The Kentucky Republican said he was briefly unconscious, had no stroke or heart attack, and is not ready to return to Senate votes.
Sen. Mitch McConnell disclosed Sunday that a fall at home left him briefly unconscious and led to a hospital stay that has kept him away from the Senate since June 14. The 84-year-old Kentucky Republican said doctors found no broken bones, concussion, heart attack, stroke, tumors or hemorrhages, but that he developed a mild case of pneumonia while hospitalized. McConnell said he remains fit to serve and is working with staff, though he will not return to the Senate floor to vote yet because he is still recovering. His office released a photo of him with his wife, Elaine Chao, after weeks of sparse updates fueled questions from both parties and a public call from Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear for more transparency.
