McConnell reveals fall, pneumonia behind weeks-long Senate absence

What's next: The 84-year-old Kentucky senator said he is in rehab and still cannot return to the Senate floor to vote.

Sen. Mitch McConnell disclosed Sunday that a fall left him briefly unconscious and hospitalized, and that he later developed a mild case of pneumonia during a weeks-long absence from the Senate. The 84-year-old Kentucky Republican, who has been out since June 14, said doctors found no broken bones, concussion, heart attack, stroke, tumors or hemorrhages. McConnell said he has since moved to a rehabilitation center but, on doctors' advice, will not return to vote yet. His prolonged absence had fueled intense questions in Washington about his condition and added strain to Republicans' narrow Senate majority. McConnell is not seeking re-election and is due to retire in January.
