Mateta loses FIFA bid to void final year of Crystal Palace deal
What's new: after a Premier League tribunal kept the contract binding, FIFA ruled the dispute falls outside its jurisdiction.
Jean-Philippe Mateta has failed in efforts to strike out the final year of his Crystal Palace contract, with FIFA ruling it does not have jurisdiction over the dispute. The France striker is challenging the 12-month extension Palace activated in 2024 on a deal that now runs to the end of this season. An independent tribunal under Premier League rules had already heard the case, and Palace maintain the contract remains binding. Mateta, 29, joined permanently from Mainz in January 2022 after an initial loan spell. If he had succeeded, the forward could have moved closer to becoming a free agent before next summer. He started Palace's season-opening 2-0 loss at Everton on Saturday.
