Johan Manzambi scored the only goal as Aston Villa beat Newcastle 1-0 in the Premier League, adding another sharp turn to the midfielder’s summer transfer story. The 21-year-old Switzerland player, who had been close to joining Newcastle before moving to Villa in a club-record deal worth just over £50 million, headed in from Joao Gomes’ cross in the 36th minute. The win was Villa’s fourth in five matches in all competitions and another sign that Unai Emery’s rebuild is gaining traction after a slow league start. Manzambi now has three goals for Villa, having also scored against Tottenham and Fenerbahce, and Emery praised his skill, intelligence and physical impact.
