Man fleeing ICE stop in Florida dies after semi-truck collision
What's new: The death came hours before ICE halted most vehicle stops nationwide in a major policy shift.
A 28-year-old Mexican citizen died Tuesday in St. Augustine, Florida, after running into traffic during an encounter with federal immigration agents and being hit by a tractor-trailer. The Department of Homeland Security said the man was one of four people in a vehicle stopped at a gas station parking lot shortly before 6:45 a.m. by agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Homeland Security Investigations. All four fled on foot, and one ran across a busy road, where he was struck and pronounced dead at the scene. Florida Highway Patrol said the 64-year-old truck driver stopped and tried to help. The agency is investigating the crash. Fox News reported ICE later paused most vehicle stops nationwide.
