Malaysia's PAS ends 6-year alliance with Bersatu, jolting opposition

Why it matters: The split throws Perikatan Nasional into doubt ahead of state polls and Malaysia's next general election, due by 2028.

Malaysia's Islamist party PAS has ended its political cooperation with Bersatu after six years, deepening a rupture at the heart of the opposition bloc Perikatan Nasional. PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said the party's leadership backed an earlier ruling by its Syura Council and would instead pursue other electoral arrangements in the name of Muslim unity before coming state elections and the 16th General Election. Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin said his party would stay in PN and try to strengthen the coalition. The parties had been at odds over alleged moves to block other Malay-Muslim parties from joining PN and over a 2025 leadership crisis in Perlis that worsened tensions.
