Maine Democrats move to make Troy Jackson Senate nominee

Why it matters: The replacement sets up a key race against Susan Collins that could help decide control of the Senate.

Maine Democrats are expected to make former state Senate President Troy Jackson their Senate nominee at a party convention in Bangor on Saturday, replacing Graham Platner after his primary win collapsed amid rape allegations. Jackson won most delegates selected across Maine’s 16 counties, and his top rivals dropped out and backed him, leaving only a long-shot challenger at the convention. The race against Republican Sen. Susan Collins is one of a handful of competitive midterm contests that could determine whether Republicans keep their narrow Senate majority. Fox News reported some Democrats also worry Jackson was elevated quickly and could face scrutiny over reports about his temper, workplace conduct, mortgage issues and his past anti-abortion stance.
