Magnitude 7.0 quake in Tibet kills 16, topples 339 homes

What's next: More than 12,000 residents were evacuated as aftershocks, rockfalls and snow complicate rescue work in high-altitude Nagqu.

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Tibet's Nagqu region late Thursday, killing at least 16 people, injuring dozens and collapsing or damaging 339 homes, according to Chinese state media. The epicenter was in Baqên County, a remote high-altitude area northeast of Lhasa. Chinese authorities sent rescue workers, police, soldiers, dogs and relief supplies as crews searched damaged villages and worked around road closures caused by rockfalls. State media said more than 12,000 people were relocated, power was cut in some areas and rail traffic was halted on affected routes. The US Geological Survey recorded multiple aftershocks, and forecasts of intermittent snow added to concerns for survivors staying in tents or cars.
