Magnitude 6.7 earthquake hits Peru’s Andes, no damage reported
What’s new: Officials said the quake’s depth, measured at roughly 67 to 99 kilometers, likely limited damage.
A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck Peru’s Andes on Thursday afternoon, shaking parts of the country’s south and center without immediate reports of casualties or damage. The U.S. Geological Survey placed the quake at 1 p.m. local time and said it was centered northwest of Upahuacho, while another report cited an epicenter near Aniso. Source reports also differed on depth, with estimates ranging from 66.7 kilometers to 99 kilometers. Hernando Tavera, head of the Geophysical Institute of Peru, said the quake’s depth helped prevent major destruction. Peru sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone of intense seismic activity.
