Mace casts South Carolina GOP governor primary as tight fight

What's new: Nancy Mace argued Donald Trump's backing of Pamela Evette gave her only a modest lift ahead of the June 9 vote.

Rep. Nancy Mace said South Carolina's Republican primary for governor remains highly competitive despite President Donald Trump's endorsement of Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette. In an interview published ahead of Tuesday's vote, Mace said Evette got only a small bump from Trump's backing and predicted the race could head to a runoff. Trump endorsed Evette last week as early voting began, and term-limited Gov. Henry McMaster has also backed her as his preferred successor. Mace said she expected Trump might pass her over after she supported efforts in Congress to force disclosure of Justice Department files tied to Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell.
