M6.1 quake shakes waters off Tokyo, no tsunami

The epicenter was 169 km southeast of Asahi, Kanto, and no injuries or damage had been reported by late Friday.

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake shook waters off Tokyo, Japan, on Friday at 7:39 p.m. local time, with no tsunami warning issued. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said the shallow quake struck offshore in the Kanto region. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) placed the epicenter about 169 kilometers southeast of Asahi, east of Tokyo. JMA recorded seismic intensity level 3 on Japan's 0-7 scale, meaning the shaking was felt by nearly everyone indoors and items on shelves could rattle. By late Friday, there were no official reports of injuries or damage. Japan sits at the junction of four major tectonic plates in the Pacific Ring of Fire and experiences hundreds of earthquakes each year.
